This is America Theme Analysis
The most important themes in This is America by Childish Gambino are police brutality/violence, mass shootings and gun violence. Throughout the video there are many instances where these themes are exemplified through his beautiful storytelling.
Police brutality is a growing concern in the United States. In situations like Tamir Rice. A 12 year old boy shot and killed for no reason. In the music video, a person says “get down”. This could mean a dance move or a he needs to get off the car, which could mean police violence.
In addition to lyrics of police brutaliry a moment of silence was dedicated to the students who died in a school shooting which occurred in Texas. One second of silence was dedicated to each student who died in the school shooting. Also the AK spray on the choir was an allusion to the black church shooting.
Lastly he shoots a man point blank execution style. This is a nod to gun violence and the NRA. There are also examples of black on black violence.
